Shapewear Production Process: From Design to Finished Product

Do you ever wonder how your favorite shapewear goes from a simple idea into a gorgeous finished garment? Today, I’m going to take you behind the scenes on this awesome journey, breaking down the key steps from initial design to end product. At the end of this article, whether you are a brand looking to add shapewear to your product line or a trading company sourcing top quality shapewear, you will walk away with a sense of appreciation for the craftsmanship and careful planning that went into these product development steps.

Design and Development

The shapewear journey starts with the conceptual phase. We think about who we sell our products to and what problems they have that our products can solve. Are we creating a girdle for postpartum support? Are we creating something for everyday smoothing? Are we creating a special piece of compression shapewear for high-performance exercise and competition? It’s important to make sure that the design and function of shapewear are done correctly off the get-go.

After design concepting, we move onto creating prototypes. We fuss around with different fabrics—different blends of nylon, spandex, or cotton—to get the right balance of stretch and comfort. We create prototypes in a way that allows us to constantly edit and change until we get a product that performs well and looks good.

Material Sourcing

Next, let’s talk about fabric selection. We need to find fabrics that have elasticity, breathability, and durability. This can be a lot more complex than people realize. We have had designs where we worked with up to 28 different fabric types before we found the fabric that actually worked for the design. It’s something that you have to be really conscious of.

Once we have our fabrics selected, we take sample fabric in and test it. We conduct tests that stretch the fabric and make sure it doesn’t rip. We do tests that pull the fabric and make sure it can take some serious tension. We also test for color fastness. There are a lot of things that go into making sure you have the right fabric for your products.

Production Processes

With the materials in place, we start to cut and sew. This is where the shape comes in with the cutting and sewing. For certain styles, especially ones that require more support like bras, we have to make the mold cup. Up to 40 steps go into making sure that the garment is shaped and moves with your body the way it should.

Quality Control

We continue QC throughout the manufacturing process. We do over 30 quality control checks. We check the seams, the stretchiness, and the overall integrity of the garment. We want to make sure that every single piece of shapewear not only meets the industry standard, but exceeds it when it comes to the integrity of the garment, as well as how comfortable the shapewear is for the end consumer.

Then, before we finalize the production, we run it by real consumers. They wear it, they fit it, they give us feedback on how comfortable it is, and any possible adjustments that we need to make. We will do that until we get the product exactly right before we run it into mass production.

Finalization and Distribution

Once we pass all of our quality control checks, we move into packaging. This is where we take all the shapewear and create the brand element, which is adding our labels and our tags to the shapewear so that we can highlight different features and benefits of the product, as well as provide care instructions.

Finally, the shapewear is ready to be shipped. No matter where that shapewear is going—either to retail outlets or directly to consumers through online platforms—we are making sure we’re actively marketing that product and introducing it to the marketplace for purchase.
